"Blue": the results of our latest #toadartchallenge

Our prompt- from the mind of regular contributor Rachel Cabral- was simply, “BLUE”.

This creative challenge drew out one of the most diverse sets of submissions we’ve seen- 2 songs, one animation, one painting, one photo, one cyanotype, one cake, two poems, one video. Here’s the entries!

FIRST PLACE: Brock o’cull

Brock’s song “Everything Blue” really captivated us with this atmospheric, haunting-yet-hopeful ballad dedicated to his brother. Brock’s brother became disabled some years back after a devastating brain injury from a head-on collision. Brock put a lot of his heart into this one and we thought it was a beautiful processing of grief & helping each other through tragedy- and just an all around solid piece of music. You can find Brock & several great ways to hear his music here

2ND PLACE: Rachel Cabral

Rachel was not only our 2nd place winner, but also the originator of this challenge’s theme. Her painting is entitled, “Feeling Blue.” Excellent work as always, Rachel!

3RD PLACE: TIE between Juleah Miller & Caleb Miller

Yes, it’s a tie for third place… bc we’re not great at honorable mentions, and we really wanted to feature both of these works.

You might assume that our third place winners are related, given the last name… but in one of life’s nonsensical coincidences, they are not related and just happen to have the same last name.

Here’s Caleb’s original song, “Blues”: hear more from Caleb by looking up “Vagabond Grove” on your fave music platform, or keep an eye on the local calendars to see when they’ll be playing!

Juleah has given us a wide range of submissions in different mediums over the past couple years- here’s the animation “Ancient Toad Cave Loom” that earned her third place this time!
