Poem
Joplin, Missouri
When you follow that unshakeable urge down
Down where the highways turn into wide pastures,
You will stumble upon the concrete city that
interrupts the slow-spoken fields.
You will walk down Main Street at night
And come to the creeping conclusion that the
Neon lights like to follow you,
whispering “come be, come be, come co—”
They never finish their sentences.
Beware to not step on the smiles in the
Concrete because once you do,
You’ll end up
like the rest of them.
Run when the wind picks up and the windows start to giggle.
You will walk past those
Houses to get home.; the ones that are all the same
In rows upon rows
lurching and looming.
Keep your head down; those houses
will slither towards
you.
