57: a poem by Cathy Monteone
What causes a leaf to fall?
Is it the sudden gust of wind
Ripping it from its brothers
The shudder of a passing squirrel
Shaking it from its home
The gnawing of an ant
Or the slow, slow process of time
As cell by cell
Molecule by molecule
It slowly droops, creaks
Breaks away
And goes twirling fluttering spinning
To the world below

Cathy is a native Joplinite who has been enjoying poetry since she first heard her mother reading "The Village Blacksmith" and "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod." True to her bohemian soul, Cathy's favorite poetry form is free verse and she enjoys bringing her inner life into tangible form with her art.
